For the latest issue of Diplomat magazine I produced this piece to sit alongside and article that discussed the neglect that world governments were applying to green issues on the premise that there are more pressing issues at the minute. The argument was that stalling things any longer could leave things too late to fix.

Fo'c'sle - The Boathouse

The Boathouse has recently been undergoing extensive building works, adding a new room. This room has been dubbed the Fo'c'sle (Forecastle - The forecastle was originally a castle-like structure at the front of Medieval ships used by archers to shoot down on the enemy.)

Inside Housing Magazine - Homelessness

Working again with my regular client, Inside Housing Magazine, I was asked to produce a piece about homeless people (not necessarily rough sleepers) going to their local authority for help in being housed. Unfortunately lots of applications are being declined, however, many of these are then being overturned following an appeal. The idea for this image was brought in by the art director, I merely had the simple task of drawing it out as well as doing a couple of spots.

Diplomat Magazine - Domestic Violence

A piece about Domestic Violence is never a simple one to conjure an idea for, especially when you're style is a bit "edgy." For this piece by Baroness Scotland, about how achieving a greater balance in gender equality should in turn reduce the number of cases of domestic violence, I eventually decided, after a lot of deliberation, that this was a piece I could tackle with something off my "things-I-really-want-to-draw" list.

The Boston Globe

I was recently working on a piece for The Boston Globe's Op-Ed. The text talked about the differences in health and safety seen by children from the US and India. Working with the art director we completed the piece with the girl and the snake but at the last minute the writer decided to remove the piece of text the illustration was based on for fear of being offensive towards her daughters school.

The decision was therefore to go with this motorcycle piece.

Supported Housing - Inside Housing Magazine

A serious lack of updates here recently due to me moving city (I've left Manchester behind for Southsea, Hampshire) so this is the first in a series of catch up posts.

A few weeks ago I was asked to produce an illustration for Inside Housing magazine. The feature was about supported housing providers who basically offer housing to mainly disabled people, having money they would get, go directly to the tenant thus rendering them out of work and in a state of need.

Captain Pugwash & Scrufts - An Alternative Dog Show at The Boathouse

Captain Pug~~wash~~ was born out of another new poster for The Boathouse, Falmouth. For their alternative dog show, Scrufts, I had to come up with something nautical and fun, Pug~~wash~~ seemed appropriate. Anyway, I felt he didn't get the attention he deserved sat on the boat so I made him into a piece on his own.

This piece accompanied an article in The Boston Globe about a woman who gets dragged along by her enthusiastic bird-watching husband on his Big Day (a birdwatcher’s attempt to identify 100 different species in 24 hours.) Needless to say she finds it all quite boring.

Vodka in Siberia - Contagious Magazine

In Contagious Magazine, Martin Lindstrom recently discussed the advantages for Brand Managers and CEOs to explore target markets first hand rather than staring at countless charts and graphs in order to direct their marketing strategies. The article focused on a trip Lindstrom had taken to Siberia where he spent his time drinking vodka with the young locals. This is the image I produced to accompany it.

Biomimicry - Diplomat Magazine

This latest piece was produced for an article in Diplomat magazine about the advantages of biomimicry. Some spiders building the tensioning wires on a bamboo and liana suspension bridge fit the bill quite nicely.

The Greatest Betrayal - Sydney's Child magazine

My first job over in the land of Oz, this piece was created for Sydney's Child magazine (also rolled out in regional variants in Melbourne, Adelaide, Brisbane and so on.) The article spoke about the devastating effects of bringing a new child home into what was previously a 1-child family and the feelings of betrayal that the eldest child feels.

Obviously due to the magazine's readership it forced me to be a bit more "mum-friendly" with it than I would usually approach things.

Social Media Revolution

Seemingly the hot topic at the minute, this commission from The Diplomat came in shortly after I completed the Facebook monster for Contagious. Talking about the uprise of social media and it's use in revolutions in the middle east, and also the helpfulness of a tool such as Twitter when used in an emergency relief effort such as the Haiti disaster.

Taking my stand from Eugene Delacroix's "La Liberté guidant le peuple" here's the final result.

Royal Occassions at The Boathouse

Classy as ever we went with "Kate Loves Willy" as the header for The Boathouse's Royal Wedding celebrations. It ties in with a new brew by the local Skinners brewery who have done a special ale to commemorate the day by the same name.

I've also been working on their new summer postcards recently too. You can see the final design below. Bizarrely they also turned out to be quite Regal without me thinking about it:

Contagious Magazine recently discussed whether users of Facebook were consciously avoiding adverts placed on its platform by other brands. This was wrapped in the context of the brand managers as anglers and the users as fish, with facebook as the biggest fish in the pond. This is the image I produced which accompanied the article.

I've recently been working with award winning design studio Cuckoo on a little Halloween piece.

“Some bright spark came up with the idea that the Cuckoo team should spend the night of Sunday 31st October, Halloween, locked inside the studio, Most Haunted-style. In the dark, with only torches, some pizza, a cheeky beer… maybe even Yvette Fielding and Derek Acorah for company,”

So, as many of you know I've been working on a book of 18th Century slang for a while now. Here's 5 of the final drawings, with their relevant quotes, I've done for the interior of the book which will be out just before Christmas from "Summersdale Publishing" to act as a nice little stocking filler.

I'll have quite a few copies of it to sell personally if you want one.
